As a former nursing home social worker and preschool family advocate, I know that visiting a long-term care facility can be tough for anyone, especially children. Over the course of my career, I have found that one way to help ease those fears is to read books about the subject to the kids. The books may help to familiarize them with what they may see during their visit as well as open up discussions about their feelings on the matter. With that said, here's a brief rundown on several books that might be helpful in such circumstances: "Let's Talk About When Someone You Love is in a Nursing Home" Diana S. Helmer's "Let's Talk About When Someone You Love is in a Nursing Home" is one book to consider utilizing before your child makes a visit. It gives an overview of what your child may experience while there. It also contains pictures of children visiting loved ones as well as health care related equipment. Wheelchairs and blood pressure cuffs are just some of the pieces of equipment shown in the photos. In my opinion, this book is suitable for preschoolers and kindergarteners. "The Helping Place" Marsha Kibbey's "The Helping Place" is another book that is great to read prior to an initial nursing home visit. Unlike Helmer's book, it focuses more on the types of people that are apt to be living in such a facility. It also touches upon what it is like to interact with the home's residents and staff. I would recommend it for elementary school age children. "My Grandma's in a Nursing Home" Judy Delton's "My Grandma's in a Nursing Home" is a good book to read if your child is afraid to visit the facility. The book's storyline addresses those fears and points out some of the benefits of human interaction. The downside is that the book is very dated and may be hard to find. "Old People, Frogs and Albert" If you can't get your hands on Delton's book, Nancy Hope Wilson's "Old People, Frogs and Albert" is a superlative substitute. It also addresses some of the fears that kids have about visiting nursing homes. In addition, it is easy to find in book stores. In my opinion, it is suitable for elementary school age children. "Sunshine Home" From my perspective, Eve Bunting's "Sunshine Home" is an exceptional book for spurring discussions about the emotional aspects of nursing home placement. In the story, a young boy initially has a hard time expressing his feelings about seeing his beloved grandmother in a care facility. He eventually opens up to his family about his feelings. Thus, you may want to read it prior to your child's first visit as well. Based on the text and the subject matter, I would recommend it for young children of all ages. "Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Patridge" I really liked Mem Fox's book "Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Patridge" as well. Its storyline is unique in that it focuses on a child that actually enjoys visiting a nursing home in his area. Personally, I think that some children may take comfort in hearing the story prior to a facility visit. "What Do You See When You See Me?" Jeannie St. John Taylor's "What Do You See When You See Me?" is definitely one book that I'd suggest taking a look at as well for one main reason. Its storyline focuses on a child that is afraid of a woman that lives in the same nursing home as her grandmother. Based on my experience, this is not an uncommon situation. Therefore, the book provides a wonderful way to address the issue with your children in a non-threatening manner. "The Sunsets of Miss Olivia Wiggins" Lester L. Laminack's book "The Sunsets of Miss Olivia Wiggins" is worth considering too. Its storyline focuses on a child visiting his great grandmother, who has advanced Alzheimer's disease. I found favor with it because it indirectly shows children how they may connect with someone that has extensive cognitive impairments. It also features beautiful, touching illustrations and is readily available through major bookstores. I would recommend it to parents of young children of all ages. "A Young Man's Dance" Speaking of advanced Alzheimer's disease, you may also want to think about picking up a copy of Laurie Knowlton's book "A Young Man's Dance." Its storyline focuses on a child whose grandma no longer remembers him and how he copes with it. Personally, I thought that it was very well written. I found the illustrations touching as well. "Loop the Loop" Barbara Dugan's book "Loop the Loop" made my list because of its moving storyline. It focuses on a child's enriching relationship with an elderly woman. I could see it being used to spur discussions about activities that could be engaged in together at a care facility. The book is often hard to find in bookstores. Thus, I'd suggest that you consider asking for it at your local library. "Visiting Miss Pierce" Finally, I'd recommend Pat Derby's book "Visiting Miss Pierce" for tweens and teens. Its storyline focuses on a teenager's interactions with nursing home residents. Those interactions teach him about people in general. I like the book because it addresses such issues from an older child's point of view. Unfortunately, there are not too many books that I know of that cover the issue from that perspective.
