Debate about the public health care option in the Health Care Reform bill is hot and heavy but, for the most part, it leaves out the human factor. Those on Capitol Hill and other high-powered pundits have no idea what health insurance really means to the "common man". Facts and figures are fine, but they don't tell the whole story. Statistics can be manipulated to show that the sun is cold and the sky is pink-and-purple polka-dotted, but that doesn't make it so. Anyone who is or has been uninsured for a prolonged period of time, especially if they have ongoing health issues, can tell you that some form of universal health care is vital. The working poor make too much for public assistance but live from week to week or even day to day. Many of these people work for companies who either do not provide medical coverage but the cost is prohibitive and the employee has to choose between coverage and rent. I speak from experience on health care accessibility. I've had jobs with excellent medical coverage and little cost for the premiums. I've paid half of my income from a 30-hour-a-week job for medical insurance and been happy I was doing so because it covered the medical bills when my husband had a heart attack. On the flip side, most of my adult life I've had little or no medical coverage and did not qualify for any of the public programs like Medicaid because I earned a little too much. In other words, I WAS the working poor. I've held positions where medical coverage was available, but didn't really cover anything. I've been offered excellent coverage options that I couldn't take advantage of because of cost. I've also nearly died due to not having ongoing and consistent access to proper medical care. How can you expect a person to be a productive member of society if they do not have access to care when they need it? How can you accept that so many people in our country live in fear of illness? I'm not talking about catastropic illness or the high cost of medical care. I mean the simple ability to visit a doctor's office for basic care. I'm referring to the ability to walk into a doctor's office without cash in hand for treatment by a medical professional. I'm talking about not having to wait for an illness to progresses to the point where an ER visit is necessary. I'm talking about catching the flu, missing two weeks of work, and not being able to pay rent or buy groceries because of loss of income. I know its an unpopular idea, but a base system similar to Canada's would be a lot better for the majority of Americans than the current system. Make it accesible to everyone then, instead of fining people for not having medical coverage, make it financially beneficial for the employers to provide GOOD medica coverage? Why not give those who DO have decent coverage a tax credit based on what they pay for insurance, similar to deductions for out-of-pocket medical costs? I, for one, would be thrilled with such a system. I'm sure a large portion of the population would agree. Unfortunately, the people with the "big voices" like congressmen and those who make money off of the current system mostly care about the bottom line and not the human condition. Maybe those of us who would be affected the most should band together and make our voices heard. Heaven knows "we" outnumber "them". |
